Poker Winrate in BB/100: The Metric That Really Counts

All pros measure their game in BB/100. Not a technical whim: it's the only metric that fairly compares performance across stakes, formats, and session lengths. Yet many amateurs have no idea of their real winrate — and navigate blind.

This guide explains how to calculate your winrate, interpret by stake, know when your sample is sufficient to conclude, and how to concretely improve it.

What is BB/100 winrate?

Winrate in poker is measured in big blinds won (or lost) every 100 hands played.

Formula:

Winrate (BB/100) = (Net win in BB / Number of hands) × 100

Example: you play 10,000 hands at NL25 (BB = $0.25). You won $125 = 500 BB.

Winrate = (500 / 10,000) × 100 = 5 BB/100

This metric is universal: it compares your performance across stakes (NL10 vs NL100), formats (cash vs MTT in bb-equivalents), and even operators.

Why BB/100 and not $/hour?

Both metrics are valid but measure different things:

Concrete case: Player A grinds 4 NL25 tables at 6 BB/100 = $6/hour. Player B grinds 12 NL25 tables at 3 BB/100 = $9/hour.

→ Player B is less skilled but earns more (volume). Both metrics tell different stories.

• Medium field (200-1000): 20-50% = excellent
• Small field (<200): 30-100% = excellent

How many hands to conclude?

THE question every serious player asks. The answer depends on desired precision and your true winrate.

Implication: under 100k hands, your observed winrate can be very different from your true winrate. A player "winning 8 BB/100 over 30k hands" may actually be at 2 BB/100 (positive variance).

If your BTN is only at +10 BB/100 → leak. If your BB is at -30 BB/100 → major leak (folding too much or defending poorly).

• Vs c-bet flop 75% pot
• Vs probe turn 50% pot
• Vs river overbet

If you systematically lose vs a given sizing, you have a structural leak.

By villain profile

• vs Fish (VPIP >35%)
• vs Tight (VPIP <18%)
• vs Reg (VPIP 22-26%)

Negative winrate vs fish = major problem (they should be your profit source).

Increase your winrate: 5 levers

1. Reduce preflop leaks

Most profitable and fastest lever. Preflop errors occur in 100% of hands. Good starting points:

• Open ranges by position
• 3-bet ranges
• BB defense ranges
• Fold to 3-bet frequencies

2. Master c-bet flop

3. Improve table selection

At equal volume, playing tables with 1 fish + 4 regs vs 0 fish + 5 regs changes your winrate by 3-5 BB/100. Leave fishless tables.

4. Reduce tilt

Tilt costs 10-20 BB/100 while active. If you tilt 20% of the time, that costs 2-4 BB/100 on your average.

5. Review 30-60 hands/week

When your winrate justifies a move up

You can move up when:

1. Winrate ≥ 5 BB/100 over 50k+ hands at current stake
2. Bankroll = 50 buy-ins at higher stake
3. No persistent tilt (verified on recent sessions)
4. Heart in the game (motivation to learn new field)

If any condition is missing, stay. Premature move up burns more bankrolls than any other behavior.

Common winrate measurement mistakes

1. Concluding on 5k hands. At this volume, observed winrate can be ±15 BB/100 from true. No conclusion possible.

2. Mixing stakes. Average winrate over NL10/NL25/NL50 says nothing. Segment by stake.

3. Ignoring rakeback. Rakeback can be 1-3 BB/100 extra. Count it for true net gain.

4. Measuring in $/100 instead of BB/100. $/100 doesn't compare across stakes. BB/100 does.

5. No tracker. Without tracker, you estimate by eye. Eye is biased (selective memory of big losses or wins). Use objective tracker.

Winrate and coaching: how much to invest?

Investing in coaching/tools pays off if:

Annual coaching cost < (Δwinrate × annual volume × BB value)

Example: NL50 (BB = $0.50), 100k hands/year. A $200/month coach ($2400/year) adding +1 BB/100:

• Extra gain: 1 × 100,000 / 100 × $0.50 = $5000/year
• ROI: 5000 / 2400 = +108%
