GrindLab vs PokerTracker 4: Two Ways of Using Your Hands
PokerTracker 4 is the historical benchmark for online tracking, alongside Holdem Manager 3. Years of iteration, an enormous statistics library, a HUD configurable down to the pixel. If you have played seriously for a while, you have heard of it and probably used it.
GrindLab is not attacking the same problem. Where a classic tracker stops at diagnosis, GrindLab continues into the decision. This article compares both approaches honestly, what each does better, and for which player.
Two different philosophies
PokerTracker 4 is a measurement tool. Its promise: everything that happened in your hands is stored, indexed and filterable. You can isolate any situation in a database of several million hands and produce a statistic from it. The HUD is that database expressed live.
GrindLab is a decision tool. Its promise: your hands are raw material for analysis, not just for a table of numbers. Tracking feeds the Lab, where you build an opponent range by hand and read the EV of every available action.

What PokerTracker 4 does better
No point dancing around it: on its own ground, PokerTracker 4 is ahead.
Statistical depth. Hundreds of configurable metrics, broken down by street, by position, by pot type. Fold to c-bet in a 3-bet pot in position on the turn is an available, displayable statistic.
Database filters. The filter engine is the tool's real masterpiece. You can build extremely precise queries across your full history and produce a report from them.
HUD configurability. Multi-tab popups, conditional colour coding, pixel positioning, separate profiles per format. A player who has spent years refining their HUD holds value that is hard to replace.
Maturity. Years of fixes, very broad room support, and a community that has documented every edge case.
Holdem Manager 3 occupies the same territory with different interface choices. Everything in this article applies to both.
What GrindLab adds
The Lab, in the same application. This is the structural difference. From an imported hand you open the analysis, build your opponent's range combo by combo, apply weights, and get the EV of every action. PokerTracker 4's replayer includes a basic equity calculator, useful for comparing two hands; it is not the same object as a weighted range engine with a per-action verdict.
Cloud instead of a local database. No database to back up, migrate or repair. Change computers and everything follows. For a player who alternates between a desktop and a laptop, the difference shows up daily.
Windows and Mac natively. The legacy tools remain Windows-first. On macOS, GrindLab runs without a virtual machine.
French as well as English. Interface, stats and documentation in both. The legacy trackers are English only.

The database question
This is the least spectacular point and the most structural in daily use.
A classic tracker stores your hands in a local PostgreSQL database. That is where its filtering power comes from, but it imposes an upkeep cost: backups, migration when you change machines, maintenance as the database grows, repairs after an OS update breaks something.

The trade-off is clean: query power against zero maintenance. Only you know which of the two you miss more today.
The workflow: where the difference shows
Take a spot you misplayed last night.
With a classic tracker: you filter your database, find the hand, replay it, and confirm that your fold to c-bet in 3-bet pots is too high. Diagnosis made. To find out what the correct decision was on that specific hand, you open another piece of software.
With GrindLab: you find the hand in your history, open it in the Lab, build the range you assign your opponent based on their profile, apply the smart filters to tighten it, and read the EV of calling, folding and raising. You move from observation to decision without changing application or account.
That continuity defines the tool more than any feature-by-feature comparison. It is what makes a session review routine genuinely sustainable, because it removes the friction between "I spotted a hand" and "I understand that hand".
What GrindLab does not do yet
Honesty first, on the two points where the veterans keep the edge.
Live postflop stats. The HUD shows VPIP, PFR and 3-Bet, which covers rapid profiling and is enough to classify an opponent against the player types framework. If you want fold to c-bet by board texture displayed at the table, that is not available yet.
Arbitrary database queries. PokerTracker 4's filter engine remains more powerful for isolating a very specific configuration inside a massive history.
Both limits are real and acknowledged. They mostly concern very high volume players whose edge lives in fine postflop lines against recurring regulars.
Do you have to choose?
No, and many players do not.
Both tools read the same hand history files from your room's folder, without conflict. You can keep your usual HUD while GrindLab syncs your hands to the cloud and serves as your analysis tool.
That is in fact the most common transition: players keep the paid tracker for a few weeks, notice they use the analysis side more than the query side, and let the licence lapse.
Which tool suits which player
Choose PokerTracker 4 or Holdem Manager 3 if:
- You play very high volume and your edge rests on granular postflop stats
- You have built a custom HUD you do not want to lose
- You regularly write complex queries against your database
- You are on Windows and Mac support is irrelevant to you
Choose GrindLab if:
