Donk Bet in Poker: Why and When to Bet Out of Position

Donk Bet in Poker: The Misunderstood Play Coming Back into Fashion

For fifteen years, the poker community treated the donk bet as a cardinal sin. Coaches repeated "never donk". Regs saw a donk and were sure they were facing a fish. Then solvers arrived, and the script flipped: the donk bet exists in GTO equilibrium on certain boards, and refusing it systematically leaves EV on the table.

This guide explains exactly when donk bet is correct, on which boards, what sizing, and why most donk bets observed at tables remain amateur errors.

What is a donk bet?

A donk bet is a bet made:

  • On the flop (or later)
  • Out of position (OOP)
  • By the player who just called preflop, not the raiser

The donk inverts the usual order: normally, you check and let the PFR (preflop raiser) c-bet. When you donk bet, you take initiative preemptively.

Example: UTG opens 2.5bb, BB calls. Flop 6♥7♠8♣. BB donk bets 4bb instead of checking.

Why donk has a bad reputation

Historically, donking was associated with typical amateur errors:

1. Weak donk out of fear. Player with medium top pair donks to "see where they're at". Builds the pot with a hand that doesn't want a big pot.

2. Donk with a draw. Donk with a flush draw, reducing fold equity and committing to check-fold turn if missed.

3. Donk the nuts in "panic". Donk with a set instead of check-raise, losing PFR's re-raise value.

These patterns are real and explain why regs see a donk and think "fish". But solvers nuanced this: on certain specific flops, low-frequency donking with a mixed range is mathematically correct.

When donk is correct: 3 criteria

1. Range advantage for the caller

Donk works on boards where the caller's range structurally beats the PFR's. Example: on 6-7-8 rainbow vs UTG open, BB defending with standard range contains:

  • Straights: 9-T-J-Q-K, 5-6, 5-7, 5-9, etc. — many combos
  • Two pair: 76, 86, 87 — frequent combinations
  • Sets: 88, 77, 66

While UTG's range contains mainly AA-99 (overpairs without straight) and AK (missed).

→ Master the concept in our range advantage in poker guide.

2. Nut advantage for the caller

Beyond global range advantage, the nut fraction matters. On 5-6-7 rainbow, BB can have straights (98, 89, 4-5, 5-7, etc.) UTG almost never has.

3. Adapted sizing

A small donk (25-33%) with mixed range = correct. A pot donk with a medium hand = error. Size communicates intent.

Flops favoring the donk from BB

FlopBB range advantageFrequent donk?
6-7-8 rainbowStrong (straights, two pair)✅ 25-35%
5-6-7 rainbowVery strong✅ 30-40%
3-3-2Moderate (low trips)⚠️ 15-20%
A-K-2Weak (PFR has all Ax)❌ <5%
K-Q-JStrong if BB defends wide✅ 20-30%
9-9-2Moderate⚠️ 10-15%

Building a donk range

A balanced donk range contains:

Value (sets, straights, two pair)

Absolute nuts you want to build the pot with. Donk small to allow PFR to raise (you raise back).

Strong draws (combo draws)

Open-ender + flush draw, pair + flush draw: these have enough equity to donk for protection and fold equity.

Bluffs with blockers

On low connected boards, hands like 9-T offsuit (gutshot + blocker to high straight) can donk bluff occasionally.

NOT to donk

  • Medium top pair: prefer check-call
  • Bluff catchers: check-call or check-fold
  • Air without equity: check-fold

Donk bet by street

Donk flop

Most studied. GTO frequency: 5-30% depending on board. Use sparingly with structured range.

Donk turn

Rarer. Typically appears when the turn drastically changes dynamic: card completing a draw BB represents, or pairing the board favorably.

Donk river

Almost nonexistent in equilibrium. If you arrive at the river after check-call check-call, your range is too capped to donk credibly.

Donk bet vs check-raise: which to choose?

With a strong hand out of position, you have two active options:

Check-raise:

  • Lets PFR put chips in first (c-bet)
  • Polarizes your range more (PFR thinks "monster or bluff")
  • Ideal vs PFRs who c-bet wide

Donk bet:

  • Builds the pot directly
  • Reduces PFR's fold equity (they can't c-bet and fold)
  • Ideal on boards where you want to extract over 3 streets

Common donk mistakes

1. Pot donk with weak top pair. You build a pot you don't want. Check-call.

2. Donk with flush draw alone. You reduce fold equity and commit chips without turn plan. Prefer check-raise or check-call.

3. Donk on every flop. Donk should be frequent only on boards where your range has the advantage. On 90% of flops, check is correct.

4. Sizing too big. A 75% pot donk announces "I have very strong". Your bluffs and medium hands become unplayable. Stay at 25-33%.

5. No turn/river plan. Flop donk without follow-up is an error. Plan your line over 3 streets before donking.

How to react to a donk

Donk from a fish

Treat it as a value bet. Fold marginal hands, raise nuts, be cautious with bluffs.

Donk from a reg

Donk from a reg = difficult read. On a board where donk makes sense (low connected), they're likely playing balance. On a board where donk doesn't make sense (A-K-Q rainbow vs your open), it's likely a bluff or weak top pair — raise.

Key takeaways

  • Donk bet is legitimate on certain boards in GTO, despite its bad reputation.
  • Favorable boards: low connected (5-6-7, 6-7-8) and some paired.
  • Sizing: 25-33% pot for balanced ranges, large only for polarization.
  • At micro-stakes, donk remains mostly an error — stick to check-call/check-raise.
  • A donk range must contain value, draws and bluffs — not just medium pairs.
